Designs are exclusive rights on two-dimensional patterns or three dimensional objects. They are registered on request if they are new and possess originality. The criterion of originality means that a design should contain aspects, forms or lines that are not only determined by functionality.

A grace period of 12 months allows the designer or rightholder to test the design in the market before filing a design application. In this case, the test product will not be considered for the evaluation of the novelty. This applies to Swiss and Community Design registrations, and also to certain other countries.

In Switzerland, the maximum protection of a design is 25 years, obtained after five successive renewals of five years each.
